Have you ever wondered why it’s so hard to permanently shed a few pounds? Why there are so many diets and none seems to work?
I’m just reading Good Calories, Bad Calories which is shuttering whatever is left of my belief in western science. Don’t get me wrong, I love reading about new achievements and discoveries and I’d still love to think about scientists as independent masterminds solving nature’s puzzles just for the sake of wisdom.
At least for the Western science this might be wrong. This book (thouroughly and independently researched so far I know) shows how science goes wrong as soon as industry develops an interest in a matter.
Eg. around the 1970’s there where two theories about why we get fat: it was either sugar or dietary fat. Scientific evidence pointed to sugar, but for the industry it was way more profitable if it was fat because this way they could market new and expensive products. So what do we believe today? Correct. Good Calories, Bad Calories tells the story of study after study being either manipulated or ignored just to get the results the industry wanted. And there’s just no way to mess with the food industry, because too many people earn big money from others being fat.
At the risk of sounding like a conspirer: you can’t trust what you’re being told about your health. The whole system depends on you being sick in some way, because if you weren’t, you wouldn’t buy something to get better and they’d run out of business. It’s that easy, sadly. (There are many books written about this matter; I always thought they were exaggerating… but did you know that low-fat-diets seem to promote cancer?)
So for me, I’ve decided that the only way to stay healthy is to inform myself from as many and as independent sources as possible. And while it’s really hard to filter through all the information you get and through all the scams about alternative medicine, I stil believe Ayurveda with its gathered experience of thousands of years (and from time when there was no greedy industry) and its approach to healing yourself by knowing yourself is an answer to those problems.
What do you think about western medicine and science?
